Five Things to Know Before You Grow It Out

The transition out of dyed hair is mostly about pacing — and patience. Here are five things stylists tell their clients again and again when they decide to grow their grey in.

1. Decide on a strategy

Three common paths: cold-turkey grow-out, gradual highlights to blend the demarcation line, or a single big chop. Pick the one that fits your life, not your Instagram feed.

2. Tone, don't dye

A purple shampoo every 7–10 days keeps brassiness off lighter strands. Skip it if your grey is already cool — overuse can turn hair lavender.

3. Moisturise more than you think

Grey hair has less natural oil. A weekly leave-in mask and a silk pillowcase make more difference than any expensive bottle on the shelf.

4. Re-think your wardrobe slowly

Cool greys love jewel tones, charcoals, cream, and crisp white. Yellow-greys flatter rust, olive, and warm neutrals. Try before you buy.

5. Take a photo every month

Progress is invisible day-to-day and obvious at six months. Future-you will want the receipts.
